Its time to load the bike again and head back to South America
Its time to load the bike again and head back to South America

Its September 1st 2025 and 8 years since my last trip to South America with my motorbike. In the intervening years i have been satisfying my wanderlust with amazing journeys around France and Spain, and discovering just how amazing , diverse and scenically wonderful these places are. However. in the back of my mind has always been to get back and finish the trip in the place I fell in love with last time I was there.

This time will be a longer deeper look at some of the places I have been before, and an exploration of new places. Some high altitude passes, if they are open after the winter season, and a look at the far north of Argentina and Chile.

This year I am going with a friend , Tim, so together we will be able to explore places a little further off the beaten track as doing it alone before meant I was a little cautious to not take too many risks. Together we will have a more exciting look at the out of the way places.

The plan is to start in Buenos Aires, ship our spare tyres to Barriloche for collection after about 6 weeks, the head South from BA towards Ushuaia. It`s a little early in the season, but will make for some challenging rides. From there to Punta Arenas in Chile and then head north following Ruta 40 , and Ruta 7 in Chile. These roads are not the remote fabled roads of the 1990s that initially made this a dream destination for me, but there are roads that run alongside and around, that have not been touched by time and progress and it is here I hope to find the Argentina and Chile that was always in my head.

We will head north to Mendoza and stop to enjoy a few days of wine country before heading into the more remote High Andes and northern reaches of Argentina and Chile, before eventually turning southeast towards Uruguay and Buenos Aires for return to Europe for Christmas.

Today my motorbike has its final service before heading off and is getting a new pair of shoes for the journey. With an expected mileage of around 18000km, we think we will get away with a single tyre change along the route, but expect both sets to be well and truly used by the end of it all.
